A Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDi BlueMotion saloon car has just set a world record for the greatest amount of miles driven by a standard production car on one tank of diesel.

The attempt, witnessed and confirmed by the Guiness World Record team saw the car travel 1526.63 miles before running out of fuel, and was conducted in the real world, on roads in France, rather than the artificial environment of a test track.

The overall fuel consumption for the journey came out at an incredible 88.93 mpg and reinforced VWs commitment to economic motoring.
